The new The Mayfield Care Home team had a wonderful first week together as we did a mix of volunteering and training for our new roles. The new luxury care home in Whitby will offer residential and dementia care and is due to open at the end of March.

The first day of volunteering was at Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary which is getting ready to open its doors to new wildlife casualties having been closed for a year. The place was a hive of activity with a huge number of projects going on. These included new enclosures, a pool, shelters, drainage, roofing, and much more! It is an amazing place doing incredible work and it was great to see meet some of the animals and get a glimpse of what goes on.

Our task was to clear the new wildlife forest of weeds and to plant trees which included oaks, silver birch, green beech, hornbeam, alder, rowan, crab apple, downy birch, field maple, aspen, hawthorn, Hazel, blackthorn, dogwood and dog rose.

It was a hugely enjoyable day with fine weather and we got a lot done! We look forward to seeing the progress at Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary and are sure its reopening will be a huge success!

Our second day of volunteering involved picking up litter around West Cliff. We climbed the bank and went along the beach with our litter pickers and bin bags. It was a very cold day and the team did well to stay out for as long as we did. Although we were lucky it wasn’t pouring with rain which was the forecast! A hot drink in the Spa Pavilion was well-deserved after the activity.

We were very grateful to the Whitby Beach Sweep team for helping us organise the day and lending us their equipment. They do brilliant work to regularly clean up the beautiful beaches in the area.

The Mayfield Care Home will open its doors to residents at the end of March. It is a luxury home with state-of-the-art facilities including a cinema, hair & beauty salon, garden rooms, beautiful lounges and dining rooms, and landscaped gardens. The building has been designed with its residents’ comfort, enjoyment and safety as its top priorities, and it will generate its own energy requirements with solar panels and ground source heat pumps.

The Mayfield will offer five-star hospitality to its residents, including restaurant-quality food and a whole range of activities and trips for its residents.

The Mayfield will be having an Open Weekend on 25 and 26 March when anyone can come and meet our team and have a look round our stunning new building. We will be open between 11am and 3pm and there is no need to book.
