When Diane saw that we were raising money for Dementia UK, she didn’t hesitate to help us reach our £1,000 goal. It was her way of giving back—a heartfelt tribute to her beloved husband, Colin, and a thank-you to the team at The Mayfield Care Home who cared for him in his final days. She was especially grateful to Jan and Marie, who were with Colin in his final hours, ensuring he was never alone.
Colin was a true gentleman and an absolute pleasure to look after. Born in Hawes in 1942, his family moved to Whitby when he was 11. They took over a newsagent on Baxtergate, where Colin worked with his dad after leaving school. Colin eventually took over when his dad retired. It was there that he met Diane, the love of his life. They married in 1967 and built a wonderful life together.
After retiring in 1999, Colin and Diane embraced adventure, travelling the UK by canal boat. Colin had a love for squash and was a proud member of Whitby Rifle Club.
When Colin passed away, Diane was deeply touched by the kindness and support shown by our team. Her donation was not just a gesture of generosity but a reflection of the love and appreciation she felt – for Colin’s memory and for those who cared for him with such compassion.
